Ill never forget meeting with my first (of many) client who was struggling with bipolar. I was a little bit afraid because I only had a basic knowledge of the problem and even less understanding of effective treatment plans for the disorder. The first three sessions I had with this bipolar client I simply let her talk. I asked questions as a method of gaining information, but I barely gave any tidbit of counsel or direction. Forty-Fold Increase in Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis in Children over Last Decade
March 28, 2008 in Bipolar Diagnosis, Bipolar In Kids, Bipolar News & Stories | No comments
(NaturalNews) The diagnosis of children with bipolar disorder increased 40-fold in the time period between 1994 and 2003, a new study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry has revealed.
Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a term applied to a condition in adults in which a person swings between severe manic highs — characterized by high energy, little sleep, and frenetic activity — and depressive lows, characterized by not only negative emotions such as sadness, anger and guilt, but also by disrupted sleep and eating patterns, irritability, chronic pain and even suicidal thoughts. Diagnosis of children with the disorder was very rare until the mid-1990s, when a number of psychiatrists began to promote the view that the symptoms of the disorder manifest differently in children.
Alcoholism and Bipolar Disorder

It seems fairly commonsense to avoid over-indulging in alcohol if you are a bipolar sufferer, particularly in light of recent research which shows that alcoholism and bipolar disorder are linked.
The research showed that alcoholism and bipolar frequently go hand in hand. One usually develops before the other, more commonly bipolar disorder which in turn increases the risk and later leads to alcoholism.

Vincent Van Gogh and Bipolar Disorder
February 24, 2008 in Bipolar News & Stories | No comments
Vincent Van Gogh and bipolar disorder is a topic that the psychiatric community still debates to this day.
Despite his great success, Vincent Van Gogh was also known as a lonely, tortured artist who many felt was insane or at least on the edge of madness. Debate has always raged as to his mental condition, and whether it was schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, paranoia or absynth addiction. Perhaps it was a combination of all four!
And so the debate about Vincent Van Gogh and bipolar disorder still rages. It is a testament to his immense talent that today, a century after he has died, the world still remembers Vincent Van Gogh. It is obvious that mental illness and insanity are not enough to stop geniuses from creating masterpieces that will be with us for eternity.
Colin Andrews has written an interesting article comparing the mental conditions of Van Gogh and the equally mad (if not more) Munch. Here it is:
Not Bipolar Disorder, It Is Only Stress

Before I could understand my daughter’s medical diagnosis as one having a bipolar disorder, I needed to reflect on my family’s history.
I grew up in a rural town in Florida in the 1960’s. My mother was rather eccentric, while my father usually stayed in his bedroom. My father was an army officer during World War II. He was known as a ‘90 Day Wonder,’ or as the label implied he became an officer through three months of specialized training.
The horrors my father must have witnessed from going to Nazi Germany prevented him from sleeping at night. Supposedly, he had seen dead bodies floating in the water along with the smell of rotting flesh in shallow graves when he entered Germany . Father never spoke much about his life as an army officer, except to say that he never wanted to go hunting for game again. He kept a rifle in the bedroom closet and placed a box of bullets in a safe place. Not one of my three brothers or me ever touched his rifle. We knew it was forbidden.
Are There Alternative Treatments For People With Bipolar? One Man’s Story.

Are there alternative treatments for people with bipolar? What really works? There are so many negative stories about the psychiatric medications commonly prescribed for bipolar sufferers, and confusion abounds about the right mix of treatments.
Here’s an article from someone who knows first hand, read on and see.
Ken Jensen
Teaching others about bipolar disorder has become somewhat of a life purpose for bipolar sufferer Ken Jensen. Lost in a bipolar fog for almost eight years, Ken has lived first hand with the debilitating symptoms of bipolar and has now beaten it.
After being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Ken discovered that doctors invariably treated his symptoms solely with medication, and with wildy varying degrees of success. His symptoms constantly reappeared, no matter what drug regime he was on. After following every instruction and medication program for six years, Ken just kept getting worse.
Tip! Bipolar natural supplements work to correct imbalances & restore critical elements in the nervous system and brain.
It was then he had a moment of clarity and began searching for relief and healing outside mainstream medicine. After a lot of experimenting and research, Ken found that path out of the bipolar jungle, and led himself back to the land of the living. His life now continues to improve, and he also realized that a big part of his journey would be spending time and effort to help others emerge from the darkness as well.
Shut Up And Take Your Pills (By Ken Jensen)
I’m not against medication for bipolar disorder per se. But I’m against ignorance. And if you think medication is your only route to relief from bipolar then you may be ignorant of your other options. If you learn of those options from someone with proof that they work and don’t investigate further? Well, now you’re just being plain ignorant.
My symptoms worsened every year for almost eight years. I ate medications like I was being paid to do so. They did not work well or at all depending on the scenario. Desperation drove me to find other answers outside of the accepted norm. Not only did I find them but they also gave me my life back. I learned to address what the medication does not.
This brings me to the issues surrounding medication that bipolar people can come up against:
